This week at Cliftonville saw us celebrating some fantastic mathematical accomplishments. Not only were there examples of wonderful maths going on throughout the school by groups and individuals in the classrooms, but we also entered some very challenging competitions. Our 'Young mathematician of the year team' competed against St Faiths School in Ash for a place in the competition finals at Cambridge University. We do not know the outcome of this round of the competition yet, but we are immensely proud that our team got through to the regional finals - they are winners already.
Some of our year 5 and 6 children entered the 'Primary Maths Challenge' this week. They had to answer 25 very challenging questions in just 45 minutes. We had three Gold winners - Leah Reagan year 6, Amy Joseph year 6 and Oscar Dobson year 5. Pictured are all the bronze, silver and gold winners, but everyone who entered did brilliantly. The questions were really difficult and no one gave up. It was a fantastic example of the children living out our school values, aspiring high, being resilient, showing respect and enjoying learning.
Year 6 children at Cliftonville Primary School enjoyed a special careers morning this week where they had the chance to chat to people from a number of different professions and ask them more about their work. The annual event was arranged by Mrs Dale and involved the children moving around a carousel in small groups to interview fourteen visitors. There was a wide range of jobs represented including hairdressers, nurses, lawyers and gas engineers. All the visitors commented on the enthusiasm and politeness of the children and how well prepared they were in the questions that they asked. The session complemented the school’s work on raising aspirations.

Thank you to everyone for making this such an amazing day. It was so great to see school council taking on such a huge project across the school. Thank you for donations of cakes and for supporting all of the fund raising. Tammy Brown who works in our pre-school made an amazing cake which won the staff bake off...and Mrs Brunger won it in the raffle which followed! Zlata in pre-school won the colouring competition and can be seen below with Mrs Tuffs! We are still counting all the money but will definitely be sending off over £800.
Dear Parents of children in Year 1, 2 and 3
We have booked 30 places on a first come basis for a trip to Manor House Forest School on Friday 16th December. It will be four hours of Christmas Forest Fun making holly wreaths and Christmas decorations, flying down the zip wire and toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate.
Children will need to wear suitable warm and wet weather clothing and footwear. They will also need a packed lunch and a drink.
The cost is £12.50 per child which must be paid online; this includes transport by Manor House minibus. Although the children will learn a lot and have a great time, it is not directly linked to the curriculum and therefore there is no school subsidy. Also, should your child be absent on the day, we would not be to offer a refund as the contract is with Manor House.
All of our usual off-site health and safety procedures will be followed and our school staff will be in attendance.
As part of our series of 'Come and...' sessions for all year groups, Year 1 parents came in to read with their children. We were so pleased with the number of mums and dads and grandparents who came along. A huge thank you to them and Mr Sharpe and his Year 1 team for organising it.
We were thrilled to learn to day that, following last week's competition, our fantastic team has won a place at the regional finals. Congratulations to the team and thank you to Mrs Weitzel for her support.

The National Young Mathematicians’ Awards are the only team maths competition for primary schools in the UK. The competition, now in its seventh year, is run in conjunction with the NRICH project at the University of Cambridge and is designed to inspire and challenge talented mathematicians from across the UK. The competition will consist of three rounds. The first will be a regional knock out undertaken at an Explore Learning centre on the 8th, 9th or 10th November. Winners will go through to the Semi Final on the 23rd November where school teams will battle it out against other top schools in their region to try and win a space at the Grand Final taking place at the University of Cambridge on 7th December. Our team consists of four Year 6 pupils and they will compete in the regional competition on the 8th November.
Good luck to the team!
Year 6 have been working on "The Highwayman", a narrative poem written by Alfred Noyes. The poem tells the story of a nameless highwayman who is in love with the landlord's daughter named Bess. The fantastic work they have produced is on display in the library. Please have a look if you are in for Early Bird sessions! Well done to Year 6.
