  • School Dog letter

    Tue 25 Feb 2020

Dear Parents and Carers                                                                                                                            24th February 2020

For some time, we have been investigating the idea of having a school dog. The research is overwhelmingly positive of the benefits that having a school dog can have on the whole community. Studies have shown that the presence of companion animals can improve the well-being of children and lower anxiety levels, simply by making the environment happier and more enjoyable. We have spoken to a number of primary schools where a school dog is already successfully in place. They shared with us their experience of the positive impact that dogs have had across the school. We have also informed our insurers and gained approval from the Governing Body.

In the long term we will be looking at having some ‘PAT’ (Pets as therapy) dogs in our school, however in the shorter term we will be having a couple of friendly dogs on school site for special events. The first event being World Book Day where some children will get the chance to read to them.

Both dogs are low shedding dogs in order to minimise the chance of allergic reactions. Both dogs are fully up to date with their vaccinations and worming. Both have achieved ‘Silver’ Kennel Club Good Citizenship standards.

A full risk assessment has been completed and is available on request.

There will always be a designated member of staff (their handler) present during any interaction with pupils. This will start with a 2-hour block during World Book Day, where a number of children will get the chance to read to both dogs.

This is early days, but we hope that, in time, dogs will become much loved and important members of our school community.

Any parent who does not wish their child to interact with the dog, is invited to write and inform me of your wishes. Alternatively, please feel free to contact me on the telephone. Also, if your child has any known allergies to dogs then please inform me.

  • Competition Time

    Fri 14 Feb 2020

    Competition!

Thanet Dementia Action Alliance has given us the exciting job of designing their logo. They are doing fantastic work in our local community to raise awareness of Dementia by working with businesses to make them Dementia friendly. Many people have already benefitted from the support they provide for themselves and their family living with Dementia. They are keen to expand their work in Thanet and so need a logo for their Facebook page and website. The logo needs to include the name ‘Thanet Dementia Action Alliance’ but the rest is up to you! If your child would like to design a logo to be entered into the competition (there will be a KS1 and KS2 prize) please can you design it on an A4 piece of paper and hand in to Mrs Frith or the office by the Friday 28th February. Judging will be in March and the prize will be given in an assembly with a representative from the Thanet Dementia Action Alliance.

  • Cliftonville performs at the Coastal Academies Trust (CAT) spectacular event

    Fri 14 Feb 2020

On Tuesday 11th, a large number of children performed at the CAT spectacular music event along side pupils from Dane Court, Hartsdown, King Ethelbert and Royal Harbour.

Our children were an absolute credit to the school, the signing choir and our ukulele group performed to a packed audience. They were absolutely brilliant. There will be pictures to come.

A big thank you to Mrs Seeman, Mr Neve and Mr Dyett who had worked with the children in preparation for this wonderful evening.

    Well done all!

  • Coming soon....World Book Day Thursday 5th March

    Fri 07 Feb 2020
World Book Day is on Thursday 5th March and we are looking forward to celebrating it in school.  The theme this year is “Sharing a million stories” so to allow us to focus on this, we will not be asking the children to dress up.  Instead there are going to be a huge range of different opportunities for the children to share stories with one another including: reading with older and younger children, reading to our school dogs and hearing stories from a number of different adults in school.  The children will also receive a World Book Day token that they can spend in supermarkets and bookstores.  It is sure to be a very fun day!
