Author of the Term – Winning Entries!
After lots of deliberation, the winners of the Term 6 writing competition were Sophie Pyke (2G), Kerri-Ann Rolfe (2G), Alec Godden (RB), Rhys Richardson (4A), Mia West (2G) and Harry Johnson (RB). The theme was based on the library's author of the term: Oliver Jeffers. Entrants had to make a list of things that the boy and penguin (from the story Lost and Found) might pack in their suitcase to take to the South Pole.
Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who took part.
Watch this space for the new author of the term and competition in September!
This term, Miss Conellan, who facilitates the Pupils' School Council, spent a week in Westminster as part of the Teachers' Institute Programme. Miss Connellan has come back with lots of great ideas to teach the children about aspects of democracy and law making. There will be a special themed week in November which coincides with 'Parliament Week'.
Year 5 have been using their maths, organisational and team work skills to design and make a board game to help Year 2 children with their maths. The children worked very hard and created some professional looking games with clear instructions. After testing them out on each other, they taught Year 2 children how to play them. All the children enjoyed the session and it was really great to see the patience and kindness of the older children in helping the younger children doing calculations. Thank you Mrs Arnold and Mrs McGeoch!
Following the success of opening the library last summer through the holidays, Mr Hedges will have it open again every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am until midday starting on Tuesday 28th July through to Thursday 27th August. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be a chance to change books and keep up to date with Accelerated Reader quizzes. Mrs Bennett has kindly organised a summer reading challenge to make a long paper chain of books read! More information will be sent home.
Eleven children were invited to attend a special celebration event at the QE11 Conference Centre in Westminster on the 9th July. They travelled up to London by train, accompanied by Mrs Spackman and Mrs Troth. All of the children were chosen for their efforts this year across the curriculum and especially progress and attainment in English and mathematics. In addition, two of them, Ruby and Leo, had won regional competitions for poetry and photography respectively. The children and staff were treated to performances from the London Gospel Choir and the PiXL choir. Mrs Troth was asked by PiXL to introduce the children from across the whole of the South East region. They were presented with their awards by Matt Dawson, ex-England rugby player and team captain on 'A Question of Sport'....he made a very inspiring speech about individual responsibility, resilience and team work.
This week year 4 had a 'Shape, Space and Measures' day. The children spent all day working in groups doing practical activities that involved using the skills and strategies they had been learning in class. There were many activities that involved a variety of measures and the children had to weigh items, and measure capacity and length. Some of the children devised their own investigations with surprising results. Did you know that your leg is approximately 3 times the length of your foot? There were also activities with shape. They had to recall the names and properties of shapes they had been learning about in class to create 3D shapes. When talking about position the children were using coordinates and the compass points. The children thoroughly enjoyed this maths themed day and consolidated so much learning as well as adding new skills and strategies to their mathematical understanding.
Many thanks to Miss Pardo who organised this event for our children.
