January 2023 has seen the first project of the newly formed Reading Ambassadors. These are a group of 20 Key Stage 2 children who applied to share their love of reading and help promote it throughout the school. It was a tough selection process with over 70 applications. Children had to explain their reasons for applying, talk about themselves as a reader and get a reference from their teacher. In the month that they have been in role, the ambassadors have got to know each other, chosen the books bought with the money donated by The Margate Bookshop, selected an author of the term for KS1 (Oliver Jeffers) and planned, prepared and delivered a workshop for Year 1 on his book “Stuck”. Each term, the Reading Ambassadors choose an author of the term for KS1 and KS2 and then plan and deliver an activity to promote the author. 6 of the Reading Ambassadors also travelled to Chartwell House care home on World Book Day to read with the residents there. This intergenerational project has continued every term since.
The Reading Ambassadors were consulted and involved with the redesign of the school library - which has been a resounding success.
