• Y1 'Come and...read' session

  Thank you to all of the parents who came along to last week's 'Come and Read' event.  This was one of a series of sessions planned for this year to share all the wonderful learning happening for the children right across the school.  They have included sharing home learning projects, singing, reading, arts projects and writing.  Thank you to Mr Sharpe and his Year 1 team for arranging this session and to the children for their enthusiasm in sharing their reading progress.

  

• Sport Relief 2016

  Cliftonville does Sport Relief

   

  The children at Cliftonville Primary School have again raised over £500 for Sport Relief. This brings our school charity fundraising to over £2300 since September.  The school council led a range of different activities for the whole week that included a skipathon, hula-hoop challenge, treasure hunt, hook a duck, cake sale and dress like a sporting champion. The children have really got involved and have enjoyed leading on all the activities. Thank you to all the staff and parents who supported the children in raising the money for charity, but most importantly, thank you to all the children who have all been very generous and have participated in the activities for such a wonderful cause.

  

• Thanet Earth School Recipe competition

  Dear children and parents,

   

  We are excited to announce that Cliftonville Primary School has been invited to take part in the Thanet Earth School Recipe Competition this year. The purpose of this competition is to raise awareness of healthy ingredients and encourage experimentation in the kitchen. The Masterchef-style event takes place at East Kent College and provides the perfect occasion for pupils aged between 5-16 to showcase their ideas.

   

  As a school we are invited to submit up to four entries for consideration by a panel of local chefs. The winner in each category will see their recipe transformed into a recipe card handed out in Tesco Extra, Westwood Cross, with their school receiving a voucher for £300 to spend on cookery equipment. All 12 finalists invited to take part will receive a beautiful cookbook and a special apron.

   

  To enter the competition children should:

   

  1. Create a recipe that contains at least one of the essential fresh ingredients (tomatoes, cucumber or peppers)

  2. The recipe can be hot or cold but must take no longer than 40 minutes to prepare. The finalists will be expected to prepare and cook their dish themselves, with assistance provided for health and safety purposes

  3. Recipes should be creative with limited parental involvement

  4. The recipes will be shortlisted on the entrant’s effort, imagination, variety of ingredients and appeal to determine which four will be submitted

  5. Completed entries should be handed in at the school office or given to Miss Powell by Wednesday 23^rd March

   

  Schools shortlisted by Thanet Earth will be notified by 29th April 2016, with finalists invited to cook their recipes with support from East Kent College on Wednesday 18th May, 2.30pm-5pm where the winners will be announced and prizes awarded.

• Reading Stars competition winners

  Cliftonville Reading Stars

   

  Wow! A record breaking number of entries were received for our Reading Stars competition held over the half term holiday. Congratulations to Harvey Brown in RP and Sara Farkas in 4K whose names were drawn out of a hat of all those children who completed their Reading Stars entry sheet.

   

  Thank you to all the children who entered the competition – the record sheets are hanging up on display in the Learning Resource Centre – and thank you to the parents for supporting and encouraging your children.

• Amazing World Book Day

  We celebrated World Book Day with a bang this year! The children took part in a host of fantastic events throughout the day to really celebrate their love of reading. Dressed up as their favourite book characters and with the sun shining brightly the children started the day with a Fun Run outside on the school playground to raise money to buy even more exciting reading material for school. They also enjoyed visiting a class in a different year group to share their favourite stories with each other and listen to different grown-ups reading. Our Book Swap is becoming increasingly popular with over 400 children brought in books that they had already read to swap with someone for a totally new book.

   

  Our Governors at Cliftonville have also been really generous this year and prioritised resources so that every child at the school a brand new book from the Scholastic book fair that was held in our school library.

   

  It was wonderful to see so many children taking part in the World Book day competitions too. They had the opportunity to design a book token as well as find the wackiest place to be found reading and having their photograph taken there. Lots of entries have been emailed into school for a super display. Children have been reading on horses, in chicken coops and even on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway sofa to name a few.

   

  Children across the school pitted their literary wits against a fiendishly difficult World Book Day quiz on books for young readers, too. They did brilliantly! This year’s World Book Day has been a complete success. Our children are growing into real literary whizzes! The effort they put into celebrating World Book Day is amazing and a true testament to their love of reading.  We also thank you, parents, for helping and encouraging your children to take part.

  

• Star footballer in Year 3

  Congratulations to Owen Millinson who has been selected to play in some forthcoming matches against Crystal Palace and Arsenal. His coach says he is the best Under 8 they have put forward.  Owen trains through Just4Keepers and plays for TSC. J4K now operates in 28 countries, across 5 continents and with over 10,000 children attending weekly classes.

   

  Total Sports Coaching was set up to help the sporting development of children and adults in Kent. A full community and school programme is aimed at allowing children to reach their own individual potential.  They have programmes for 3 year olds all the way up to adults which are conducted in schools and various community facilities open to all. Their extensive school programme delivers sporting activities to children throughout Kent and they also run their award winning soccer schools every school holiday.

   

  Total Sports Coaching has its own specialist Football Academies (venues in Thanet & Faversham). The TSC Football Academy is split into 3 levels; Elite, Development and Foundation. These 3 levels allow them to coach players to their potential whether they be a talented local player or a player who has just taken up the game.

• Pickleball tournament!

  Three Thanet Schools came together today to host the very first inter schools Pickleball Tournament in the UK.  This “sour name, sweet game” racquet sport has been exploding across Kent in recent months. PE Departments have started to acknowledge that pickleball is finally a racquet sport that can be mastered by children with relative ease due to the slower speed of play compared to the more traditional sport of Tennis.    The tournament, hosted by St Anthony’s school in Margate saw children from Cliftonville Primary, St Peter’s in Thanet Junior school and St Anthony’s school come together to battle it out for the winning spot. St Peters doubles partners walked away with the medal haul, marginally beating Cliftonville Primary 15 games to 14.
